session. yesterday afternoon, in an exclusive interview, president obama sat down with me in the blue room of the white house. to discuss the way forward and his priorities for a second term. >> mr. president, welcome back to "meet the press." >> great to be here, thank you. >> the obvious question -- are we going over the fiscal cliff? >> well, i think we're going to find out in the next 48 hours what congress decides to do. but i think it's important for the american people to understand exactly what this fiscal cliff is. because it's actually not that complicated. the tax cuts that were introduced in 2001, 2003, 2010, those were extended and they're all about to expire at the end of the year. so on midnight, december 31st, if congress doesn't act, then everybody's taxes go up. and for the average family, that could mean a loss of $2,000 in income. for the entire economy, that means consumers have a lot less money to make purchases, which means businesses are going to have a lot less customers, which means that they're less likely to hire and the whole economy could slow down at a time w

, david, you sat down with president obama this afternoon for an exclusive interview that airs tomorrow morning, but give us a hint. is he optimistic? do you come away with any hope that we're going to have a deal before the deadline? >> i'd say a couple things. i think the president continues to be optimistic, but he, i think, in part is doing the interview on "meet the press" because he wants to keep the pressure on republicans to get something done and made very clear in the course of the interview that there is a political cost to be paid if there is not a deal, a cost that i think he believes will be paid mostly by republicans if they don't get something done. he's gone out of his way to really cast his argument as one of protecting the middle class and that the middle class, 98% of americans don't want to see their taxes go up. if there is a failure to act. that said, the president did not strike me as overly worried about going over the cliff. both confident that they'll get a deal done and if not even though it would be a more politically charged atmosphere coming back after the

to use the money? >> senator, we heard president obama say in an interview that if congress can't get anything done and we go over the fiscal cliff, that plan "d" essentially is to have another vote on january 4th when the new congress comes in, and that would just be a straight up or down vote on extending tax cuts for middle class families making up to $250,000 a year. do you think that's what happens? >> i'm hoping that we resolve this today to give the american people some certainty. the president doesn't seem too eager to actually get involved and find solutions to deal with the number one problem facing our country. if you do what the president just proposed and raise taxes on those folks, it helps fund the government for seven days. it doesn't deal with our fundamental spending problem in this country. bottom line is the president is the only one with a pen who can sign into law something and he ought to be very involved with making sure that he gets something that he will sign that will pass both a republican controlled house and a democrat controlled
